It was funny, Miley thought, as she quietly paged through her closet in search of just the right outfit to wear on The Tonight Show later today. So many of her Hannah outfits were tied to old memories in some way. Like the pink top she wore to her first wig-fitting ever, at the age of twelve. Or the blue pleather jacket she'd worn to sing with the Jonas Brothers, or the tiny striped tank top she'd worn when she'd done that concert where she'd invited Uncle Earl to sing up on stage. She looked for a long time before she found just the right outfit to pair with her wig for later, one that wouldn't be writing over any old memories in case this went badly.

When she got to the studio, she spent a while prepping in makeup and getting into her wig and outfit --  white top, bright pink skirt, open black sweater and multicolored scarf, with nude pumps on and a lucky necklace Jake Ryan had given her around her neck -- before she made her way, heels clip-clapping, onto the stage.

And for a while, she and Jay indulged in some of their usual banter. He asked after her ex-boyfriend Jake ("long since over"), her current boyfriend (whose name Miley didn't give, but who she assured Jay was "the sweetest, most caffeine-addicted guy ever"), those awkward photos of her and some blonde girl in La Perla from the other day ("a total nightmare"), and her relative absence from the tabloids besides that ("long vacation"). Finally, with only a few minutes left, Jay asked her what she'd been dreading -- why, exactly, she'd called this interview.

Miley took a breath. "I think it'll be easier this way," she said, and stood up.

"Where're you going? What're you doing?" he asked, peering around as Miley made her way over to the other stage. There was one for the talk show segments, she knew, and one for performances. Her band was already set up at the latter, and after a few cautious strides across the room, she stood behind the mic, hands awkwardly behind her back.

"I wrote this song about--" she cracked a smile -- "an eleven-year-old girl who wanted to be a rock star. But... she also wanted to live a normal life, so... she pretended to be somebody else." She brought her hands around to her front for that, gesturing awkwardly. They made a great focal point, though. Easier to glance down if she could just look at her palms. "That was great for a little while," Miley conceded, "but she's seventeen now, and life is even more complicated. And she just doesn't want to pretend anymore."

Deep breath, and then -- "Her name is Miley Stewart."

Quickly, Miley reached up to pull off the wig and the cap beneath it, then ran her hands through her hair to comb it out. There were gasps from the audience and a remark from Jay ("Whoa! Take that, kitty cat flushing a toilet!"), and it took Miley another minute to steady her voice enough to continue.

Finally, though, she did. "Anyway," she said, "it's been a long time since I've sung without my friend here--" she gestured to the wig she was holding in her hands-- "so... I hope you like it."

"Here we are now
Everything's about to change
We face tomorrow
As we say goodbye to yesterday

A chapter ending
But the story's only just begun
The pages turning
For everyone

So I'm moving on
Letting go
Holding on to tomorrow
I've always got
The memories
But I'm finding out who I'm gonna be
We might be apart but I hope you'll always know
You'll be with me -- oh, oh
Wherever I go
Wherever I go-oh-oh

So excited
I can barely even catch my breath
We have tomorrow
To lean on for the road ahead
This happy ending
Is the start of all my dreams
And I know your heart is with me

So I'm moving on
Letting go
Holding on to tomorrow
I've always got
The memories
But I'm finding out who I'm gonna be
We might be apart but I hope you always know
You'll be with me
Wherever I go-oh-oh

It's time to show the world we've got something to say
A song to sing out loud, we'll never fade away
I know I'll miss you, but we'll meet again someday
We'll never fade away

So I'm moving on
Letting go
Holding on to tomorrow
I've always got
The memories
But I'm finding out I'm gonna be
We might be apart but I hope you always know
You'll be with me

So I'm moving on
Letting go
Holding on to tomorrow
I've always got
The memories
But I'm finding out I'm gonna be
We might be apart but I hope you always know
You'll be with me

Yeah, yeah
Wherever I go
Wherever I
Wherever I go..."

When the song was over, Miley just stayed still for a moment, not sure if she was actually leaning on the mic stand to bear her weight but not willing to risk it and find out. And she took in the audience -- clapping, cheering, the works -- and Jay -- giving her a standing ovation -- and she let go of her sparkly microphone and just beamed.
